Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which celebrated its 50th birthday last year) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.

Special guests Brian Maloney of The Type Club of Toronto and Patrick Griffin of Canada Type, representing The Society of Typographic Aficionados and Indie Fonts, will tell us everything we need to know about type, typography, and TypeCon 2008. Raffle, silent auction and plenty of swag!

Signs of Downtown Hamilton Walking Tour

The layers of our city’s history goes further than the bricks and mortar of our architectural elements. Signs of all kinds line our main streets flashing, pointing and marking the businesses that have long vanished, yet their creative identities remain. From neon to hand painted, amateur to professional, Pagoda Chop Suey to Zack’s Furniture – the signs of downtown Hamiton are an opportunity to see our city’s illustrated design past.

Please join us on Sunday, May 25 as we walk from one end of the downtown to the other in search of signs, designs and communication from the past. Tour starts at 1 p.m. in front of Mixed Media, 174 James Street North and ends at Hamilton History+HERitage for coffee and discussion. For more details please call 905.529.2323

Gord Pullar is a Hamilton-based freelance illustrator who has worked for clients big and small including the National Post, Labatt’s and Hamilton Magazine. He attended the Ontario College of Art and Design and has worked in various facets of the art and advertising industry. See a short video on brush lettering here.

Greg Smith has worked in the communications industry as a designer and art director for over a decade specializing in print design and typography. He operates Blind Pig Press for the hand production of books, posters and ephemera. Check out this short letterpress documentary.
